3D erotisk komedi Sex and Zen bryter Hongkong rekord

En 3D erotisk komedi har tagit Hongkong biljettintäkterna med storm, slog den första dagen rekord av Hollywood Avatar.

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy tog HK $ 2.78m (£ 219.000) på sin första dag förra veckan, jämfört med James Camerons episka som tjänade HK $ 2.63m (£ 207,000).

Filmen har nu tagit HK $ 17 miljoner (£ 1.34m) i fem dagar sedan den släpptes.

Företag har fått draghjälp av ett inflöde av tittare som reser från Kina där det inte är skärmade.

Sex och Zen - en remake av en 1991 Hong Kong filmen med samma namn - berättar historien om en sexuellt frustrerad lärd i det gamla Kina som förlorar sig i harem av en hertig han blir vän med.

Det kantonesiska produktionsinriktning japanska porrstjärnor Hara Saori och Suo Yukiko och Hongkong skådespelerskan Vonnie Liu.

I Taiwan också filmen tjänat TWD $ 17 miljoner (£ 360,000) i sitt inledande helgen - det bästa för en kinesisk-språkiga film i Taiwan i år, säger producenten Stephen Shiu.

Eftersom Kina inte har en film klassificeringssystem - möjliggör biobesökare i alla åldrar att se någon film - det förbjuder erotiskt innehåll på biografer.

Det är inte första gången fastlandet tittarna har rest till Hongkong för att kringgå censur av kinesiska myndigheter.

Många gick över för att titta på uncut version av Oscar-vinnande taiwanesiska regissören Ang Lees sexuellt explicita 2007 spion thriller Lust, Caution.
